Teaching of Chemistry
at the University level in Białystok started from 1973, while Biology
instruction began 3 years later. Since then 970 students of Biology
and 893 students of Chemistry were graduated with M.Sc.
degree. For many years the Institutes of Biology and Chemistry (together with
Institutes of Physics and Mathematics) belonged to the Faculty of Mathematics
and Natural Sciences. A new Faculty of Biology
and Chemistry was established on October 1st, 1997. October 1st 1998, the bachelor degree course
in Environmental Protection was introduced and since then 81 students were graduated.     The Faculty employs at present (December, 2005) 120 staff members; 28 of them have a title of professor or a D.Sc. (Habilitation) degree, while 57 have a Ph.D. degree in Biology or Chemistry. Supporting staff consists of research technical assistants 35 persons, librarians (4 persons), administration (10 persons) and maintenance (21 persons).     The Faculty offers a five-year Master degree courses in Chemistry, General Biology, and Environmental Biology.     The Faculty consists of two institutes; the Institute of Biology consists of ten departments (research laboratories), whereas the Institute of Chemistry is divided into seven departments, apart from the divisions of Biology and Chemistry instruction. The scientific activity of particular departments, their recent achievements, publications and personal data as well as curricula are given herein. |
